Vibration is a mechanical stimulus characterised by a recurring motion back and forth over the same pattern. When an athlete stands on a vibrating platform, the repetitive movement presents a strong stimulus to musculoskeletal structures (1) as a result of changes in muscle stiffness in response to the vibration, which researchers believe produces physiological adaptations to accommodate the vibratory waves.
