"It's specialized Fitness Equipment like you'd see in a health club, but it's purposely made for outdoors," said Diana Davis, a physical education and nutrition teacher at the school and organizer of the project.

The new quarter-mile paved path, called the Glenpool Warrior Walk 'N Talk Trail, winds around the school's playground and will offer nine fitness stations with machines such as the seated chest press, double sit-up board and a rowing Fitness Equipment.

The equipment is expected to be installed in two weeks, Davis said.

The school, at 461 E. 146th St., will get the equipment for about $11,000, although it retails for about $25,000. Davis said the equipment was marked down after it arrived at its original purchaser with scratches on it.

Students helped to raise $20,000 toward the project in about one year; they have about $3,000 left to raise, Davis said.

"This year, every class
that earns $100 gets a pedometer," she said.

The $20,000 that has been raised includes change collected by students, grants such as the $5,000 Toolbox for Education grant from Lowe's, and donations from organizations such as the Glenpool Foundation for Excellence, which gave $3,000 to the project, Davis said.

"It's just been all around a community thing," she said.

The idea for a paved trail sprouted when students were observed after a recent rain standing around on the sidewalks -- the only dry place to be -- with little to do during recess.

"Our playground gets pretty soggy, and we wanted something where they could still exercise," Davis said.

Concerns about childhood obesity also fueled the project.

"You can walk into any elementary school anymore and see that we have a lot of overweight children," Davis said.

Nutrition is key, and Davis said she stresses it to her kindergarten students.

The trail will be open to all Glenpool students and to the public after school hours.

Principal Marsha Nicks said the students are excited, and so is she.

"I think it's going to be something that all of us are going to be involved in -- elementary children, staff, the community -- it's going to be available for everyone," Nicks said.

"The idea of improving health is something we've been trying to do as a school, and this adds to that."
