This was an excellent editorial on physical education and brings to light that part of the childhood-obesity equation that isn't often discussed. Most kids just don't get enough exercise. But putting the blame entirely on our schools isn't the answer.
This is a communitywide problem that requires schools, our city, healthcare providers and our business community to work together to improve the health and fitness of our kids.
As a member of the Ventura County Obesity Prevention Task Force, I am familiar with some of the efforts being put forth to address this issue. I also know that the city of Ventura and the Ventura Unified School District are leaders in attempting to find creative solutions.
The one event that directly provides a role model for physical activity and generates some funding for physical education in our school district is SummerFest, which next year will be held at the school district offices May 31.
What makes SummerFest unique is that it is a partnership event that includes Ventura Unified School District, city of Ventura, Ventura Education Partnership, Kaiser Permanente, Community Memorial Hospital and many members of our local business community, including E.J. Harrison, Agromin, Affinity Bank, County Schools Federal Credit Union and many more.
This one event won't solve the problem of kids not getting enough physical activity. But it is a step in the right direction by a large group of supporters that understands they all can contribute to reducing the incidence of childhood obesity by working together to create a communitywide environment where physical activity is encouraged. Ventura is unique in this and should be commended for its vision.
