Each Spring, fifth-, seventh- and ninth-graders take a fitness exam.

Compared with last year's results, the number of seventh-graders who passed all six criteria of the test increased by 2 percent from 14.8 percent to 15.6 percent, results said. However, the results for the percentage of fifth-graders fell by about 5 percent and the percentage of freshmen fell by about 9 percent.

Statewide, 27.1 percent of fifth-graders, 30.9 percent of seventh-graders and 30.1 percent of ninth-graders satisfied all six criteria on the test.

Districtwide, 16.5 percent of fifth-graders, 16.5 percent of seventh-graders and 30.1 percent of ninth-graders satisfied all criteria on the test.

To fix the problem, Christine Anderson, assistant superintendent of educational services, said there will be meetings with elementary physical education teachers to make sure the curriculum matches state standards.

The results are important in a time when concern for the health of California's children is growing exponentially.

"We should continue to place a strong emphasis (on physical education) because it's the foundation for overall well-being," said Marcie Rivera, director of secondary education at Coachella Valley Unified.

"And if you're doing well physically and mentally, it's definitely going to be conducive to doing well academically."
