The Oshkosh Seniors Center is all about health and fitness for everyone age 50 and older. On any given hour of any given day during regular hours of operation, everyone age 50 and older has the opportunity to exercise, either in an organized class or independently on state-of-the art equipment; or attend a seminar that informs participants about how to age successfully.

All physical exercise takes place at the Oshkosh Seniors Center North building, formerly the Oshkosh Do It Center and previously know as the Annex. Programs such as seminars relating to nutrition, and other health issues, typically are held at the South building of the center located right next to Fox Valley Technical College on Campbell Road.

In order to take advantage of the walk-right-in-and-exercise opportunities at the center, registration and training is required. The Oshkosh Seniors Center will be holding its annual Fitness Center & Exercise Enrollment Fair on the following dates:

Dec. 17, 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Dec. 18, 8 to 10:30 a.m.
Dec. 19, 7 to 9:15 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Jan. 2, 7 to 9:15 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The Fox Fitness Center is open to all people aged 50 and older who are interested in working on their health and fitness through the use of a variety of strength and cardiovascular equipment. The cost is $8 per month, (residents of Oshkosh), $16 (non-residents), annual passes being $75 or $150 respectively; or $2 daily (residents), $4 (non-residents). All new people must attend a mandatory fitness center orientation, health and fitness evaluation and "Exercise Basics" workshop.

Exercise classes are open to all people 50 and older who are interested in working on their health through instructor lead classes in a variety of exercises and levels. The cost is $5 per month (residents of Oshkosh), $10 (non-residents) or $1 per class (residents), $2 (non-residents). "Music 'n Motion" and "Line Dancing" have an additional instructor fee of $1 per class per person.

Current classes include:

Music in Motion: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:30 to 11 a.m. Stretching, balance, and simple exercises for seniors with limited mobility; those using wheelchairs are welcome; instructed by the Oshkosh YMCA.

Flex 'N Stretch: Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Muscle strength and flexibility exercises for the intermediate exerciser; hand weights and bands are used.

Weight Loss Exercise: Monday and Wednesday, 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Variety of cardiovascular activities for the more advanced exerciser; some strength training and flexibility work is taught.

Beginner Line Dancing: Tuesday, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Basic line dancing.

Walking track: Monday through Friday, 7 to 7:45 a.m.; Tuesday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Monday through Thursday, 2 to 3 p.m.; no charge to walk the indoor "green path" around the exercise area. The walking track is not available the second Thursday of each month.

It is helpful and fun to exercise with people your own age. If you are aged 50 and older and would like to continue your good habit of exercising, or begin a new exercise regime with people your own age, you would be crazy to not take advantage of the exercise opportunities you are entitled to because of your age. Please try to attend one of the times at the Oshkosh Seniors Center Exercise Enrollment Fair or call 232-5312 if you have any questions. (We have seminars also if you think you are going "crazy.")
