Fitness Nation opens new facility at site of former gym

Newton - With the holiday season in full swing, it¡¯s hard to find time to take care of ourselves. We¡¯re too busy shopping for gifts, planning parties and family gatherings, and this year, shoveling snow already. So ask anyone when the last time they made it to the gym for a workout, and they¡¯re likely to tell you, ¡°I¡¯ll go back after the new year.¡±

John Sabo and his partner, Sam Reed, would argue otherwise. With the opening of their new gym, Fitness Nation, residents can definitely find the time to work out. The gym opens at 5:30 a.m. and doesn¡¯t close until 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sabo¡¯s advice is to plan your days ahead of time and to make time for yourself. ¡°Even a 30 minute workout will be beneficial if it¡¯s consistent.¡±

Two acquaintances from college became great friends after graduation, and are now partners in their new business together, Fitness Nation. With this business, residents of Newton and the surrounding towns can enjoy a home town gym. ¡°Sam¡¯s specialty is the business end of things, whereas I know fitness,¡± said Sabo. Sabo¡¯s expertise lies in performance training, speed agility training, and the sports equipment, which makes them a well balanced team as owners of the gym.

Reed is friends with the new owners of the building, who wanted to keep it a gym, so it was a perfect match for Reed and Sabo. ¡°I love it up here,¡± said Sabo. Sabo admitted to not having spent much time here before, but loved the hometown feel, and found it a great opportunity for a hometown gym. ¡°Sam and I are here everyday. We want our members to know we care.¡± Besides the usual free weights, treadmills, bikes and other exercise equipment, Fitness Nation will be offering a whole gym and spa experience. Exercise classes will begin in January in two new studios. In studio A, there¡¯s a hardwood floor for classes like step, pilates and general aerobics. Studio B is ¡°a crazy spin room with black lights and great music,¡± according to Sabo. ¡°I wanted to create something a little unique.¡±

Fitness Nation will be reaching out to everyone to join and become fit. Classes designed for Seniors and for kids as young as 8 or 9 years old will be introduced in the New Year. ¡°If you introduce fitness early it will make exercise part of your life.¡± Child care will also be available, not just for members working out, but a full time day care open to the public. The juice bar will be in full swing in January as well. A nail and tanning salon will open soon as well where the spin room used to be when it was Merriam Gateway Gym.

¡°Eventually we want to be a 24-hour gym so everyone can find the time to be fit,¡± said Sabo. ¡°Even those whose work schedules aren¡¯t 9 to 5.¡± The facility would be equipped with cameras, emergency pulls, and swipe cards to enter the building. ¡°I really wanted to keep Newton¡¯s home town gym, but with the new name which illustrates the new equipment, new ownership, and the new paint on the walls.¡±
