Through the years, the search for venues where one can achieve his or her ideal physique has gone over the EXTREME.

In fact, extreme sports have become a resort to some people who would want to achieve and maintain their desired body type. Aside from the usual forms of sports, one of the hottest extreme sports that conquer the world of the fitness buffs out there is wakeboarding.

Considered as one of the newest and hottest water-skiing sport today, wakeboarding is being preferred by more and more people. This is because the wakeboarding enables people to gain or maintain a physically fit body through high jumps and fast flips aside from pumping up one¡¯s adrenalin rush for being mind-boggling, extreme, and radical sport.

Into a new kind of "Sports fitness"

During the 2nd Philippine Cable Wakeboard Nationals held at the Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC) in the provincial capital of Camarines Sur, riders from all over the country as well as pro-riders from Australia and America showed how good this extreme sports could be not just for the body but for the overall health as well.

Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymund "Lray" Villafuerte, Jr. shares that the sport has became one of the tourist attractions in the region because it is relatively new in the field of water sports. Since the opening of CWC last May 2006, water sports enthusiasts all over has visited its top of the line facilities and relaxing environment. "CWC is the first world-class water sports complex in the country and we¡¯re really glad that people are starting to like wakeboarding as a new kind of sport," the governor says. When Villafuerte assumed position, he wanted to promote sports tourism. "I chose wakeboarding because it is the fastest growing extreme sports in the world." And because of the CWC, Cam Sur became the hottest destination in the whole region. "What makes this six-hectare complex really world-class is it uses a six-point cable ski system that brings cable skiing into a whole new level," he says. This, according to him, is sure to draw local and foreign guests, riders and spectators by the hundreds. "Because of the good weather conditions, cable skiing in the park can be done all year-round."

The governor himself is really fond wakeboarding because it keeps him fit and on the go. After learning to ride last year, he makes sure that he spends the weekends with his kids who are also really into the sport. "It was really addicting and I became hooked to it," he shares. In fact, the sport has become a part of his fitness routine. Because of the park¡¯s amazing facilities, CWC will host the 2008 WWA Wake Park World Championships on July 2 to 6. " The top riders of the world have been to CWC and they will be back next year to showcase their talents."

Despite the bad weather conditions, the over 100 participants still joined in the 10 divisions. The major winners in the CWC Cable Nationals include Arthur King in the Mens Pro Wakeboard Division, Rene Imperial in the Mens Division, Januson Dy in the Masters Division, Ernie Lopez in the Veterans Division, Jeena Lopez in the Open Womens Division, Luigi Villafuerte in the Groms Division, Julio Villafuerte Jr. Mens Division, Kateleen Reyes in the Girls Division, Josefa Feliza Ermita in the Junior Women¡¯s Division, and Dennis Divinagracia in the Open Wakeskate Division.

King shares that to be able to keep up with an extreme sports such as wakeboarding one must do a cardio sports. "Since this is more like a body building sports, they should always indulge themselves in fast-paced exercises." He also adds that to keep one¡¯s self fit for the sport, they should always watch what they eat. "For me, I avoid eating fatty foods because it provides unwanted fats," he says. "But as long as you are active, it doesn¡¯t matter what you eat." Wakeboarding for five years now, King says that the sport has really helped him to keep his body fit and healthy. "I think this sport can be an effective fitness routine because it involves rigorous muscle conditioning," he ends.

During the competition, top riders all over the world presented an exhibition. 2007 Wake Game Champion and pro wakeskater Brian Grubb advises people who are starting with the sport to keep on practicing. "The more time you spend in the water, the more comfortable you will be." He also says that riders should always fit to meet the demands of the sports. "Although there is no height or weigh requirement in this sport, it will pay if you watch your weight to be comfortable in doing tricks." Grubb also believes that the sport can be a good exercise. "Since it is an extreme game, people can lose weight if they try wakeboarding."

For Australian wakeboarder Reuben Buchanan¡ªwho has been doing the sport for 11 years¡ªweight and height don¡¯t really matter in wakeboarding. "As long as you know how to balance and express yourself once you¡¯re in the water, you can enjoy and reap the rewards of wakeboarding."

He says that before you start wakeboarding, it is very important learn the fundamentals first. "The harder stuff will be a lot easier to learn later on," he says. He also reminds everybody to always wear a life jacket and observe proper safety, no matter how good they think they are.

Aside from the wakeboarding competition, band concerts, and the preliminaries of Ms. Earth Swimsuit competition capped off the three-day event.
