It took a personal journey to set author Lisa M. Wolfe on the path to writing her first novel, "Journal of a Lifetime."

Wolfe, who previously wrote six fitness books, delved into the Christian romance genre after coming across a journal describing her late grandmother's travels to Alberta, Canada.

While Wolfe's grandmother didn't come across romance in her travels, she described in great detail the restaurants she ate at and the clothing she wore throughout her trip.

In "Journal of a Lifetime," the main character, Lindsey, also comes upon her grandmother's travel journal, and decides to follow the journal's path, step by step, in Alberta.

Lindsey discovers family secrets and romance along the way.

As for "Journal," she said, "It's much more personal. It comes from the heart and not just research."

It took the Howell Township resident one month to research and write the novel.

"It just flew out of my fingers," she said.

Wolfe recently did a signing for the book, released Oct. 19, at Aria Booksellers in downtown Howell.

Just what is a Christian romance novel?

For starters, it's not the over-the-top, gaudy variety you find on drugstore and supermarket shelves.

"It's more like a Christian love story or Christian adventure story," Wolfe said.

Not specific enough?

"You get the love story, but you don't get all the extra, X-rated stuff," she explained.

Lindsey uses Scripture for guidance on her journey.

Wolfe began her writing career about five years ago, first writing magazine articles. She found a publisher for her novel, His Work Christian Publishing, through the Internet, as she did with the publishers of her fitness books.

Her next novel will follow a similar route, in which a man bequeaths his journal to his girlfriend just before he dies. The girlfriend finds new love in her journey.

A longtime fitness instructor, Wolfe applied her knowledge of the field to the publishing world, and was successful in pitching her six fitness books to publishers.

Wolfe, who holds a degree in exercise science, has taught karate in Fowlerville, and kickboxing, salsa dancing and other disciplines in Howell.

She also teaches weight training from her home, where she homeschools her children.

She has 18 years of experience in the fitness world. She competed in one fitness competition, in which competitors show off their muscular tone, but quit the circuit when she determined the system was too political.

Wolfe has cut back on her fitness training to focus on her writing career and children.

"I can do that and be here with them," she said.
