Investments are important in our day-to-day lives and long term success.
When one invests money into something, they are looking to better themselves financially by hopefully seeing a positive return. People can work and make a living, but the people in our society who are truly financially well-off make smart investments, take some risks, and see big returns.
The same principle is true of investments we make with our time, effort and emotion. Growth and success come from making personal investments in aspects of our day-to-day lives, taking risks with our feelings and effort, and hopefully, seeing returns in our personal growth, development of friendships, and sense of worth. Without investment, or a passion and commitment to what we do, it is impossible to truly grow and succeed.
So I'm taking a break this week from talking about your physical fitness, and using this to bring up your overall well-being.
No one who is successful did so by being passive in his or her investments. Anything worth succeeding in takes hard work, emotional dedication and steadfast commitment. Whether it's sculpting that hardcore beach body, or working with a student group on campus, one cannot sit back and expect for the best to come to them without working to get it themselves.
But where has our investment gone? Why, in the midst of a campus full of student groups, sports clubs, extra-curricular activities, and University organizations do students walk through campus with their heads down and eyes locked forward, refusing to take an active interest in the things around them? When it comes to our own causes, we move to the front of the line, asking for support from others, but when it's another's group that needs support, we seem to fall to the wayside.
The college experience has seemed to migrate from "growing as an individual by stepping outside your comfort zone," to "get drunk as much as possible, and make it to class on time."
The same failure to invest comes with our lack of willingness to take care of ourselves. I'm not attempting to say that failure to have a six-pack year-round is a failure; that's unreasonable. But the way that we eat, the lack of exercise, the way we avoid the doctor until we are seriously ill, as well as the way we sleep and recreate, speaks to our failure to make a true and solid investment in our own bodies and health.
