World Champion canoeist Tim Brabants was opening a new £200,000 community fitness suite at Gedling School today.
The centre boasts technology that monitors individuals user's fitness electronically.
Tim, 30, who is taking a break from his job as senior house officer at the QMC and City Hospital to concentrate on training, said he was impressed with the facilities.
The 2007 World Champion and 2000 Olympics bronze medallist is training at Holme Pierrepont for the Beijing Olympics.
"As a doctor as well as an Olympic athlete I can see the benefits of sport and a healthy lifestyle, which is going to be wholly encouraged by the facilities at Gedling School," he said.
"It is not just for the school - it is for the local community."
The Gedling Community Sports Centre, in the school grounds on Wollaton Avenue, will be open to the public from 7am to 8.30am and from 3.30pm to 9.30pm on Monday to Friday, and 8am to 8pm at weekends.
The facility will also be available to hire to various user groups during the school day, such as health referral groups and sports injury clinics.
The new suite includes Johnson Health Tech equipment, as used by top athletes and sports clubs.
There is an interactive gym management system by Fitlinxx to allow users to create and monitor their exercise programme.
Professional instructors will also be on hand to help people achieve their goals.
This is all in addition to the existing badminton, football, cricket, tennis and netball facilities available at the school. Classes in aerobics, martial arts, dance and yoga will also be available. There will be a programme of events and taster sessions throughout the opening weekend.
The refurbishment of existing facilities and development of the new suite have been funded by £45,996 from Sport England Lottery Funding, £1,000 from Tesco Community Trust and £153,000 from the school.
Tim added that the facilities could help people taking part in the Shape Up Notts campaign, run by the Evening Post and Sport Nottinghamshire. This urges people to do at least three 30-minute exercise sessions a week.
