Winter is fast approaching and the weather is fantastic. So, head out for some great physical outdoor games and savour the goodness of nature's fresh air

SUMMER IS gone and the weather is fantastic. It is once again time for some great outdoor activities.

Of course, there are a zillion things you can do with your family and friends that will greatly help to cut down those flabs you gained during the sweltering summer and festive season. Exercising outdoors has many benefits.

For instance, you need little or no equipment to get a good workout. You don't have to put up with crowded gyms and no need to put on special gym gear. You also get Vitamin D enhancing sunshine for your skin, not to mention the free fresh air.

There are many other reasons that you can think of why an outdoor workout would fit into your particular lifestyle. Of course, office and child care responsibilities can interfere with the efforts of many mums and dads to get more fitness exercise.

Given the fact that many adults and children alike are now overweight or obese, the solution is a commitment on the part of the entire family to spend more time together. You can choose activities you can do together and support and reward each other's efforts to be more active at home, at school or at work.

For the young ones, I suggest you replace the use of food or candy as a reward for good behaviour and offer to take a walk with your child, most preferrably to the park, not shopping malls. The pleasure of your company is the best reward your child can receive and the best gift you can give.

Here are some few suggestions to give you that killer physique that you have been yearning for. Discover what free and low-cost physical activity areas are near your home, for instance parks like Al Safa, Al Wasl and Za'abeel park, bike trail, hiking trail, tennis court and swimming pool.

At the parks, besides walking or jogging, you can do simple push ups or squats. Push ups have always been one of the most effective upper body exercises and it requires no equipment whatsoever. On the other hand, many people simply don't understand the incredible power of doing a squat the right way. Through proper instruction and appropriate form, the effectiveness of the squat can be easily felt.

Another easy and cheap exercise is using nothing more than a picnic bench for support and holding some little weight on your hands, like a decent size rock. You simply step up onto your elevated surface, step down, and then repeat on the other side alternating back and forth. You will get an incredible cardiovascular workout as well and will quickly see the benefit of this great exercise.

The outdoor version of chin ups and pull ups can be done using a low-hanging tree branch. While at it, bring your body up completely until your chin is above your hands, and lower back to the start under control. Repeat for as many as you can do.

Another cheap but great exercise is running uphill and downhill. Dash up a decent size hill as fast as you can, walk back to the bottom and repeat. There are many other things you can do with your family. Here are a few more suggestions.

Dig and plant flowers or vegetables in your barkyard or garden, take a long walk or jog on the beach or play beach volleyball, canoe or raft in the ocean for an entire afternoon.

Others include skiing. This sport always gives the family a lift especially when the wind is generous. You can also jump into water sports, enjoying water walking and aerobics like at Wild Wadi. Take a nature hike, go to a driving range or enjoy a game of miniature golf.
As you can see, doing outdoor exercises has lots of benefits. So if you are up to the challenge and sick of the gym, give your body and your mind an Earth-moment and get outside and play.
