Owen is just over halfway through a £120,000-per-week four-year deal but Allardyce is in no hurry to secure the services of the club's injury-blighted record £17 million player longer term.

When asked if he wanted his club to initiate negotiations, Allardyce said: "I'd like to see him fit for the next 20 games on the trot or more and then enter into a new contract. The most important thing is that he's available for selection every week and we can control it.
"Whether that means we lose him at the end of the day or not is non-negotiable because if it happens it happens but we want to see him fit, playing and scoring on a regular basis.
"When Michael is fit and scoring every week all managers would want him in their side. If they can come up with the money a Michael Owen commands you'd move for him like everyone else would."
"He's had 11 years at the top level in a long and illustrious career and in between that are spasmodic phases of injuries he seemed to pick up from an early age," Allardyce added.
"The hamstring one persisted and other problems have arisen. That's wear and tear of a top-grade footballer now who plays too much because of demands on him.
"If you demand that much money then people demand that many games. It's a vicious circle. Michael's been an international since 17 and he's barely had a rest in any summer. There's bound to be consequences to bear later on in life when he's finished.
"We don't think he'll pick up as many injuries if we manage the situation right, if we can get a prevention schedule into him."
Newcastle chairman Chris Mort insisted there was no escape clause in Owen's contract amid talk he may leave next summer should there be a £6 million bid.
"There was a clause in Michael's contract which allowed him to leave for a certain fee during the last transfer window and the summer before, but that sort of clause doesn't exist any longer," Mort said.
"We want to see a fit Michael Owen scoring goals for Newcastle for many years to come. There is no nervousness here about his contract situation."
Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has signed a contract extension which ties him to the club until the end of June 2009.
The 33-year-old made his debut against Everton in March 1991 and has played 727 matches. Only Sir Bobby Charlton, with 759, has played more games for the club.
Giggs said: "I am enjoying football more than ever. I would like to thank [manager] Sir Alex Ferguson, the fans and everyone at the club for the great support I have received over the years."
The former Wales international has scored 141 goals and won 18 major titles in his time at Old Trafford, including nine Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and one European Cup.
Ferguson said: "Apart from his playing ability, Ryan has a fantastic demeanour and is a great role model to the younger players."
