Dr. Russo then partnered with Dr. Anthony Lauro, to devise a way for other chiropractors, with very little floor space, to add a hydraulic exercise circuit with is vital as both men and women age. The concept has proven so successful that they are now licensing throughout the country as "Stay Fit, Seniors for Life."
Basically, they've added a small exercise area to their existing office to seniors 60 years of age and older. Seniors are allowed to come in, twice a week for half hour exercise sessions absolutely free as long as they are receiving regular chiropractic care.
The equipment consists of seven non-intimidating hydraulic circuit training stations and seven walk-in-place stations. The machines are manufactured by PACE, a highly respected equipment manufacturer that has for years provided circuit training equipment to various women-only, coed, and kids express gyms.
Drs. Russo and Lauro pulled off a real coup when they recently got the endorsement of the "Godfather Of Fitness", Jack LaLanne.
"We're very excited and proud that Mr. LaLanne, a pioneer in promoting exercise for a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle, has embraced our program and recognizes the huge potential value of regular exercise for seniors in a supervised health care environment," said Dr. Anthony Lauro.
LaLanne, who at 92 still works out two hours a day, has spent his entire career promoting the benefits of exercise for a fulfilling life.
"You have to work at living, this body was made for activity, you have to use it", says LaLanne, "I think hydraulic resistance equipment is terrific. It gives something moderate, not just to older people, anybody can adjust it to whatever category they are in young or old, or strong, or whatever."
Licenses Now Available
Stay Fit Seniors provide a turnkey mechanism for chiropractors to add a senior program to their existing practice. What's most important is that there need not be any expansion to the building or to the staff.
"That's the other beautiful thing of the program. Two things chiropractors worry about, Do I need extra staff? And do I need more space?" Said Russo, "The program runs itself during the day, you do not have to be in the room to watch it. And number two, it fits in just about any chiropractic office. You only need 270 ft.²"
There are currently three locations in operation: Darian, Connecticut; Pomona, NY, and Congers, NY.
In two weeks El Monte, California will come on line and there are contracts out for two facilities in Long Island, one in Brooklyn, and one scheduled to open January 1st in Columbus, Ohio.
Top of the Line Equipment
Russo did extensive research before finally selecting the PACE hydraulic circuit training equipment for his concept. He found that the versatility for both men and women had the most appeal. The equipment has a resistance dial that can be adjusted from a setting from one to six depending upon the level of the user.
"I wanted to find the best equipment, equipment that men would not say that 'this is girly equipment'. Equipment that you could ratchet up, that's saying that a football team uses it. When I tell a senior man that says 'I don't think so, doc', I say 'come over here and crank this up for 60 seconds'.
Russo added, "Plus, Rande LaDue, of PACE, is a super guy, he's got a great product, and he stands behind anything he sells or talks about".
