SEMINOLE – Area residents seeking to tone up and shed a few pounds will find the Seminole Recreation Center a little more inviting now.
The center’s fitness room, which was previously located in the northeast corner of the building, has been moved into a larger 2,000-square-foot area that was formerly the game room. The City Council voted unanimously July 24 to allocate up to $100,000 from the Capital Improvement Fund to relocate and renovate the fitness center based on demand.Of that amount, $38,659 was used for new fitness equipment purchased from Athletic Concepts Inc. of Safety Harbor.
“We replaced some existing equipment beyond its useful life and added some new equipment that was needed,” said City Manager Frank Edmunds. “The relocation of the fitness center will certainly address the community’s needs for many years to come.”Recreation Director Jim Sheets said four new pieces of cardio equipment and four pieces of strength equipment have been added. Some of the equipment is on backorder and has not arrived yet, Sheets said.
The facility now includes a variety of Paramount weight training machines, six treadmills, six stationary bicycles and two new TS Striders. A new feature is Cardio Theater, which allows participants to listen to individually selected audiovisual entertainment choices while exercising on cardiovascular equipment.Meantime, the game room has been moved into the area that formerly housed the fitness facility.
The game room now features three pool tables, two table tennis tables, two air hockey games, bubble hockey and foosball. Plans also call to add a security camera system to the room. The fitness center and game room are available at no charge for city residents and $120 per year for non-city residents.Hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. It is closed Sundays.
